Social Biking
I have always been interested in my surroundings. Capturing mental images to preserve
and reflect on later was a common practice until I was given a camera, which is now my
facet for exploring the world around me and for satisfying my curiosities. Documenting
these surroundings will continuously be an important aspect in my work.
My photography, which documents the occurrences around me, allows viewers to see the
world from my perspective.
I am currently focused on photographing a social biking group which I am part of in
Ruston, Louisiana. These college students have come together through a shared passion.
They all ride together no matter what type of bike they have.
The passion I have for bicycles came when I rode my first fixed geared bike. Its smooth
riding and quickness caught my attention. It had never occurred to me before that a bike
could help me feel like an athlete again, a feeling I had been missing for quite some time
due to a chronic hip injury. As a former competitive distance runner from the age of
eleven to sixteen, I had finally found a means for endurance again.
I view the bicycle as art. It is another form of expression. A bike allows a different kind
of freedom that is found within its motion. Bicycles open up a whole new world of
adventures and ways of thinking. A bicycle shows the personality of the rider. It indicates
their since of style and boldness. Bikes are beautiful machines, nothing compares to its
simple pleasure.
